When was the last time you did something for the first time?
Updated: Apr 7
5th April Sunday 9:00 pm,the entire family is sitting in the balcony . Our lights are out, diyas lit and torches ready. We croon to the Gayatri Mantra, praying for strength to get past these difficult times, the air is warm and everything hushed. We see the glow of lights slowly emanating from the houses around. It's a remarkable sight.
My 8 year old remarks, "Mom, I haven't seen anything like this my whole life. We all laugh" Ditto Kaavya"The sound of bells resonating from some of the houses across. We start singing the National Anthem, the entire neighbourhood joins in, jubilant. We are all experiencing this albeit, for the first time in our lives.
Which reminds me of John C Maxwell's quote "When was the last time, you did something for the first time?"
There comes a time in life, when you feel like it's too late to even try. For me, I feel I am quite over in my head when it comes to using any modish social networking apps. It won't be too long before my children discover how gormless I am towards these things. I remember myself as a 16 year old trying to tutor my mother for using Gmail, her lack of interest always irked me. In my late thirties I now understand why it is called- The Circle of Life.
This blog is a recount of the brave hearts who never quite gave up on their dreams. These women they dared to dream and went beyond the boundaries of social norms and conduct to actually realize those dreams.
Chandro Tomar nick name "Shooter Dadi' is the oldest woman sharp shooter in the world. Chandro is a resident of Bagpat district in Uttar Pradesh. Her tryst with shooting happened by chance, when she accompanied her shy grand daughter to the predominantly male inhabitated Johri Rifle Club. At the range, Tomar took a pistol when her granddaughter could not load it and she started shooting at a target. Her first shot resulted in bull's eye hit. Ever since Chandro Tomar has never once looked back. How old was she when she took up shooting? 66 years!
Emma Rowena Gatewood, fondly known as Grandma Gatewood was the first woman hiker to trek the Appalachian Trail. She survived an abusive marriage and divorced her husband, something that was unheard of in the early 1940s. In 1955,at the age of 67, she tramped the Appalachian Trail in a pair of tennis shoes, raincoat and a small backpack.
Tamae Wantabe is the oldest woman to climb the Mt. Everest at the age of 63, ten years later she broke her own record by summiting the Everest again at 73.
These women are legends. Their journeys ever inspiring. As I write this, I am reminded of the dialogue from the movie Frozen. After being hit by Elsa's icy blast, Anna is taken by her parents to the trolls. The wise old troll examines her and let's out a sigh of relief. His verdict- Anna was lucky to be hit on her head and not her heart. The head can be changed easily but the heart can never be changed. These women chose to listen to their hearts.
We may, may not be destined to live extraordinary lives but that should not limit our experiences.
I will be working on my Bucket List from now on. The adventures on the journey of life are unknown but it's worth having an itinerary prepared. I am surrounded by so many of my peers, fellow mothers who inspire me in so many ways. They are smart, independent, conscious and conscientious women. This year will be the beginning of my firsts to learn from them and put in practice, things I never thought were plausible for me.
Three Times Over has been extremely special in my list of firsts. It is my sanctum, my retreat where I can pen down my thoughts and feelings as I move along in this journey of life with the best that life had bestowed upon me- my family, my husband and my three children.
What is it that you will be doing for the first time this year?
